Although I was born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, I recently uprooted myself and settled in Washington, DC in order to work toward receiving my master’s degree from American University’s School of Communication in print journalism with an emphasis on public policy. My ultimate objective is to combine my love of writing and fascination with politics into a career as a Capitol Hill reporter.
My goal in studying at AU is to not only hone my writing and interviewing skills, but to also add knowledge of how to use emerging technology as a way to enhance the stories I present to my audience. While I want to focus on print journalism, I also realize the need to be able to adapt to the major changes journalism has undergone in recent years.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of California Santa Cruz in 2005, I made the decision to pursue my dream of a career in the news media and enrolled in journalism courses at Valley College, a community college in Los Angeles. During my time as a writer, page editor and eventually editor in chief of the Valley Star, the school’s weekly student newspaper, I was exposed to what it was like to work under pressure and on deadline, in order to produce a publication that was read by student, faculty and administrators alike.
